UrbanExpressive’s Weekend Wrap Up
If I had the time and my Wifi wasn’t so spotty, I’d probably blog more often than I do. But alas, such isn’t the case. Plus, some stories don’t necessarily need an entire post dedicated to them, but it doesn’t mean they aren’t worthy of sharing. So I’ve decided to try something new: UrbanExpressive’s Weekend Wrap Up. A potpourri of stories and events you may have missed, and of course with a little personalization from moi. Well, let’s get started
India.Arie can breath a sigh of relief. The skin lightening rumor mill has now been passed off to Kerry Washington who’s recent cover of Entertainment Weekly shows a whitewashed version of the Scandal star. This isn’t the first time she’s been accused of lightening her skin for a more mainstream appearance. Don’t worry Kerry, the thing about skin bleaching rumors is, there will always be another Black woman who’ll be accused to take the attention off of you.
For years, rumors have circulated that the key to Will and Jada’s longstanding marriage is that they have an open relationship; because obviously, it can’t be love, right? During an interview with The Huffington Post, Jada told the reporter “No“, when the question was asked again. Elaborating further, she said she’s always told her husband “You can do whatever you want, as long as you can look yourself in the mirror and be OK“. I find that to be a very mature response, but I’m sure there will still be others who question the personal aspects of their marriage.
Freudian Slip or honest mistake? After people across the world got their panties in a unison bunch over President Obama calling Kamala Harris the “best-looking” attorney general at a DNC luncheon, the members of Make Something Out Of Nothing, LLC decided to kick up more dust and draw national attention to the FLOTUS. In an interview, Michelle Obama referred to herself as a “single mother“. Correcting the faux pas, she continued “Or, I shouldn’t say ‘single’, as a busy mother. Sometimes, you know, when you’ve got a husband who is president, it can feel a little single. But he’s there.” Click here to watch the interview.
If the worst thing that could have happened surrounding your prom was not having the right outfit, imagine being these teens in Rochelle, Georgia who may not be the right race to attend theirs. Some students at Wilcox County High School are fighting to have an integrated prom. That’s right- in 2013, this school has segregated proms and Homecoming events. The rural traditions of this town even had police officers turn away a biracial student who tried to attend the all-white prom last year. Click here to see how the teens are trying to turn around the parent sponsored segregated gatherings in post-racial America.
Just because the Oxygen channel cancelled it’s plans to air All My Babies Momma’s, starring rapper Shawty-Lo, doesn’t mean there will be no shortage of foolishness in a hood near you! What’s an expectant mother to do, when the father of her unborn child has moved on with his new (and also pregnant) girlfriend? Well, if you’re like 26 year old Shareyll Hunter from Houston, you do what any logical person would- run her over with your car! After getting into an argument with 21 year old Alise Kelly, she got into her ride and intentionally plowed into her; leaving her pinned between the house and the car. Thankfully, the baby wasn’t injured, but Kelly unfortunately had to have her foot amputated. When asked about the altercation, ‘baby daddy” Chris Chaney said he wasn’t surprised these women acted up. When asked if he was the reason for the ghetto foolishness, he replied “I mean, I am handsome“. Sigh… sad part is, I’m sure they won’t be the last women carrying his child.
Well, that’s all I have this weekend. Stay tuned for next weeks blog posts!
